Malaysia’s islamic party pledges to close Genting casino

Malaysia’s islamic party, Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) has expressed a bold intention to shut down the country’s only casino if it wins the Pahang state, where the casino is located. This proposal has sparked significant debate, touching on issues of religion, politics, and economic impact.

PAS’s proposal to close the casino

PAS’ proposal to shut down the Genting Highlands casino is rooted in its commitment to Islamic principles. The party’s deputy commissioner for Pahang, Mr Andansura Rabu, emphasised that gambling is harmful and inconsistent with Quranic teachings. However, he acknowledged that such a decision would require careful legal and constitutional considerations.

Rabu stated, “Gambling is harmful, so we have to close it. But it must be in accordance with the laws and Constitution. In Genting Highlands, the power might not be entirely ours. It could require a federal government decision, so we might not be able to shut it down.”

The proposal has elicited mixed reactions. Supporters argue that closing the casino aligns with Islamic values and reflects PAS’s commitment to moral governance. Critics express concerns about the economic implications and the potential for political overreach.

Malaysia’s casino controversy

In Malaysia, gambling is heavily regulated, with the federal government holding significant authority over casino operations. The country has historically maintained a cautious stance on gambling, balancing economic benefits with social and religious concerns.

Genting Highlands, located in Pahang, is home to Malaysia’s only casino. The casino has been a substantial revenue generator, contributing up to $1.5 billion annually to the government before the pandemic. This significant economic input complicates any proposed shutdown.

Earlier in 2024, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim ruled out the possibility of establishing a second casino resort. This decision reflects the federal government’s cautious approach to expanding the gambling sector.

The potential closure of the casino could have significant economic repercussions for Pahang and Malaysia. The casino’s substantial contribution to government revenue and local economies raises questions about how the state would mitigate the financial shortfall.
