Macau Oct. GGR down 11%, mandatory daily Covid testing to start

Macau gross gambling revenue was down 10.7 percent in October from the same month a year earlier as concern mounts over a new outbreak of Covid in the city.

According to figures from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), GGR in the month was MOP3.89 billion ($479 million), up from MOP2.96 billion in September, but down from MOP4.36 last year.

So far this year, GGR is down by half from 2021 at MOP35.71 as Macau continues to struggle with travel restrictions imposed due to its zero-Covid policy.?

Authorities are once again battling an outbreak of Covid and have mandated compulsory daily testing for three days starting on Wednesday.?

There is renewed concern about community transmission from an infected deliveryman who works for a local fish wholesale market. The source of his infection has not yet been determined.

On Sunday, MGM China’s Cotai resort was locked down with all guests and staff inside after a dealer was found to have the infection.

The latest outbreak comes just as China has reinstated online issuance of individual visit scheme visas. The return of eVisas had been seen as a key element for recovery of visitation into Macau.?
