African Games in Ghana showcases powerhouse in athletics and sports

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has announced its final list of 50 athletes who will represent Nigeria at the ongoing 13th African Games in Ghana. This list includes world-renowned athletes such as Tobi Amusan, (pictured above), the world record holder for the 100m hurdles, Ese Brume, and Ruth Usoro.

The men’s team features reigning national champions in the 100m and 200m events, Okon Israel and Consider Ekanem, respectively. Enoch Adegoke, a finalist in the 100m event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, is also part of the team. Other male athletes representing Nigeria in the 100m, 400m, 800m, and 4x400m events include Itshekiri Usheoritse, Seye Ogunlewe, Alaba Akintola, and Adekalu Fakorede.

The women’s team is equally impressive. In the 200m and 4x100m events, athletes such as Olajide Olayinka, Blessing Ogundiran, Justina Eyakpobeyan, Abinusawa Moforehan, Onyebuchi Chisom, and Amusan will represent Nigeria. The 400m and 4x400m events will feature athletes like Patience Okon-George, Esther Joseph, Brittany Ogunmokun, Okon Esther, Yetunde Saibu, and Omolara Ogunmakinju.

The 100m hurdles event will see Faith Osamuyi and Stella Ayanleke competing alongside Amusan. Comfort Anietie and Ronke Akanbi will participate in the 800m and 1500m events, while Akanbi and Ewa Peace will represent Nigeria in the 3,000m steeplechase and high jump events.

Excellence and determination shine in African Games

In the long jump event, Brume, Usoro, and Pristina Ochonogor have been named, with Usoro also competing in the triple jump event. Sade Olatoye will compete in the shot put and hammer events, while Chioma Onyekwere, Ashley Anumba, and Obiageri Pamela will aim to win medals in the discus throw. Victoria Kparika will participate in the javelin event, and Kemi Petersen will compete in the heptathlon event.

The men’s 400m and 4x400m events will feature athletes like Dubem Nwachukwu, Ojeli Ifeanyi, Nathaniel Ezekiel, Chidi Okezie, Sikiru Adeyemi, Nathaniel Samson, and Daniel Atinaya. Ibadan Ebose will compete in the 800m event, while Hamid Sambo and Musa Wisdom will participate in the 1,500m and 110m hurdles events, respectively.

This diverse and talented group of athletes represents Nigeria’s commitment to showcasing its athletic prowess in the African Games. Their participation is a testament to the country’s dedication to sports and its determination to excel on the international stage.
